Autonomy Search
Autonomy is founded on a unique combination of technologies borne out of research carried out at Cambridge University (United Kingdom). Autonomy's strength lies in advanced pattern-matching techniques (non-linear adaptive digital signal processing), rooted in the theories of Bayesian Inference and Claude Shannon's Principles of Information, that enable identification of the patterns that naturally occur in text, based on the usage and frequency of words or terms that correspond to specific concepts.
Based on the preponderance of one pattern over another in a piece of unstructured information, Autonomy enables computers to understand that there is a particular probability that a document in question is about a specific subject. In this way, Autonomy is able to extract a document's digital essence, encode the unique "signature" of the key concepts, then enable a host of operations to be performed on that text, automatically. These operations include automatic clustering of related documents, automatic information delivery, hyper-linking of content as well as more traditional short query, or keyword searching.
Bayesian Inference
Bayesian inference is a statistical inference named after Thomas Bayes, an 18th century English cleric whose work on mathematical probability was not published until after his death. Bayes' efforts centred on calculating the probabilistic relationship between multiple variables and determining the extent to which one variable impacted another.
A typical problem is to evaluate how relevant a document is to a given query or agent profile. Bayesian theory aids in this calculation by relating this evaluation to details that we already know, such as the model of an agent. Extensions of the theory go further than determining the relevance of information for a given query against a text. Adaptive Probabilistic Concept Modelling (APCM) algorithms are also used to analyze, sort and cross-reference unstructured information. A traditional statistical argument is that if a coin is tossed 100 times and comes up heads every time, it still has an even chance of coming up tails on the next throw. An alternative, using the Bayesian approach, is to say that 100 consecutive heads are evidence that the coin is biased, for example, it has heads on both sides. In a similar manner, knowledge about the documents deemed relevant by a user to an agent's profile can be used in judging the relevance of future documents.
Although no one knows for certain what Bayes' original goal was, Bayes' Theorem has become a central tenet of modern statistical probability modelling. By applying contemporary computational power to the concepts pioneered by Bayes, it is now feasible to calculate the relationships between many variables quickly and efficiently, allowing software to manipulate concepts and extract the meaning of information.
Language Independence
Autonomy is based on advanced pattern-matching technology (non-linear adaptive digital signal processing) that exploits high-performance probabilistic modelling techniques to extract a document's digital essence and determine the characteristics that give the text meaning. As this technology is based on probabilistic modelling, it does not use any form of language dependent parsing or dictionaries. Words are treated as abstract symbols of meaning deriving its understanding through the context of their occurrence rather than a rigid definition of the language grammar.

Comprehensive Coverage
The Business Library comprises of content derived from over 100 international business-to-business titles, events and training courses published by Euromoney Institutional Investor PLC.
All the bases covered
There are over 400,000 articles, going back on average from five to thirty years for subscribers to interrogate. The content consists primarily of magazine, journal and newsletter editorial features as well as Yearbooks, Directories, Workbooks and event documentation.
Markets covered by the Business Library include Asset Management, Investment Banking, Financial Law, Tax and Intellectual Property, Emerging Markets, Energy and Specialist Finance (including Project Finance, Trade Finance, Aircraft Finance, Structured Finance and Leasing).
The functionality enables users to splice, dice and package information into areas of interest. Users will enjoy a fully bespoke information tool that covers only those areas they are focused on searching, but potentially from every content-generating division within the Euromoney Institutional Investor portfolio.
Easy Navigation
Welcome to the Business Library, the new and refreshing way to search all content published by the Euromoney Institutional Investor Group. From the very beginning the Business Library web development and design team have followed the findings of countless market research exercises when building this powerful tool. Ease of use and navigation was found to be of paramount importance to the user, and this has been considered at every stage of the development process.
Clear and simple language
Clear and simple language prompts are also featured throughout. For example, the three tabs on the homepage: "Editor's Choice", "Latest News" and "Most Read" are easily identifiable.
Hit the ground running
Finding – and using – the search function is also very easy. You simply do not need to be a web expert to navigate the Business Library.
Email Alerts (Agents)
Stay informed – be at least half a step ahead of the rest of your peers
Email Alert is an automated search service that helps users monitor content within the Business Library for updates or developments and information that could concern their organisation. Users can tailor the emails by setting up their own set of rules governing which topics they wish to be informed about. In the Agent section users are presented with an easy set of options designed to specify exactly which of our information users wish to be alerted to. This will mean that users will be informed of relevant live articles the minute they are written.
The user can either choose 'all content' (including 'non-subscribed' articles), or elect to simply receive updates on subscribed content.
Please inform us if you are interested in using our Agent facility in conjunction with an aggregated email alert system that combines email alerts from a number of different sources.
Please inform us if you would be interested in a 'Business Library to Desktop' tool to allow the streaming of latest content direct to your desktop.
Saved Search
Save time – store your searches as you go
Saved Search is where you store searches you perform frequently to prevent continual re-selection of search criteria.
You can promote a Saved Search to an Agent (Email Alert) which will essentially 'track' that specific search and notify you of new articles included within that scope at time periods of your choosing (*) and through email.
(*) - regularity of your agents is dependant upon your package.
Briefcase
Save effort – store your article results into bespoke compilations
This function allows subscribers to store their article results within the Business Library itself. It is particularly useful when working on a project that involves research over a number of days or weeks.
When you find an article that you want to be able to retrieve at a moments notice simply 'Add to Briefcase' and you will always be able to go immediately to this article. Add multiple articles to this Briefcase and build up a compilation of ideal articles relating to any subject.
You can also manage your internal costing by attaching your own 'Cost Code' to any Briefcase or search.
And there is no limit to the amount of store-able content.
Related Articles
As you discover more – your Business Library learns more
Autonomy software is able to continuously develop and learn, thanks to its unique combination of Bayesian Inference and Shannon's Information Theory. This learning ability means that the more the system is used the better the information retrieval provided becomes.
All the various 'Related articles' functions provide the user with intelligent advice as to what articles are available to interrogate which are relevant to what you are trying to discover. You get:
1 - Related Articles at Search Results stage.
2 - Related Articles at Article View stage (offering alternatives from that respective article's publication source or from publications from within Euromoney Institutional Investor portfolio).
3 - Related Articles via 'Show Categories' function (offering alternative browsing via the taxonomy categorisation).
